Gas Boiler Ban in Favour of Renewables

Following recommendations from the Independent Committee on Climate Change, the Chancellor, Philip Hammond, recently announced a ban on gas boilers for all new homes, from 2025. Various ways of reducing fossil fuel as an energy source in new builds, have been mooted before, but an outright ban within 6 years, puts the measure in a formal setting. While gas for cooking will still be allowed for the foreseeable future, gas heating systems will not be a feature in new homes from 2025. The gas ban is part of an effort to reduce carbon emissions, as part of the UK’s role in tackling climate change. Up to 14% of emissions come from housing and a lot of the increase in home emissions, comes from gas boilers. So what will replace gas and what will builders and developers be installing as alternatives to gas heating?

If you’re a home owner, your plumber, builder or hot water and heating specialist will be able to advise you on the best hot water solution for your home or building, depending on a range of factors, from the age and size of the building to the budget you’re working with. So what’s the difference between a vented cylinder and an unvented cylinder when it comes to heating your water? A traditional vented cylinder requires connection to  a water tank, usually in a loft or attic space, using gravity to deliver hot water to the home. This is done by use of an immersion or by an external source like a central heating boiler. An unvented cylinder uses a pressurised system, that has a direct feed from your cold water supply, so there is no need for a cold water storage tank in the loft or attic.
